In the early 19th century thousands of fugitive slaves crossed over the Ohio river, made their way through the Underground Railroad in Ohio, and found freedom in either Canada or in some part of Ohio. These brave men and women who traveled the path and those who risked their lives and livelihood by transforming their home into a stop on the Railroad deserve to be remembered.
This project highlights some of the prominent, known stops in Ohio. Certainly, there would have been many more, but the operation needed secrecy to succeed. Much of the Underground Railroad remains shrouded in mystery to this day. The eight stops we have chosen are representative of the Railroad and the people who created it.
